Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare but very serious (possibly fatal) illness that can occur in men, women and children. It is caused by toxin (a kind of biological poison) that is produced by a type of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) that is frequently present in humans. The reported risk is higher in women under 30 years of age and teenage girls. The indicate of TSS is estimated to be between 1 and 17 cases of TSS per 100,000 menstruating women and girls per year.
